Frequently Asked Questions‚Äč

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is hypnosis used for therapeutic purposes, it is used to encourage the unconscious part of your mind to find solutions to problems.

What can I expect to happen while hypnotised?

During a session of hypnotherapy I use hypnosis to induce trance. Trance is a state of mind that involves a selective focus of attention. This is usually achieved through progressive relaxation, where you are encouraged to relax all the muscles in the body and focus on your breathing. The trance state is then deepened with visualization. While in this altered state of consciousness I will make suggestions to your unconscious mind that will help you achieve your goals or remove your problems. When the therapy is complete I will gently terminate the hypnosis and give you time for reorientation and processing your experience. Hypnotherapy is  very relaxing and extremely effective.

Can I get stuck in the trance state?

Quite simply NO, I will terminate the session by bringing you back to consciousness.  In the unlikely event of me dropping dead during your session you would awaken quite naturally.

Can you make me dance like a chicken?

You would be surprised just how often I get asked this. Hypnotherapists do not usually practice stage hypnosis. You can not be made to do anything against your will, or anything that is out of character. When you are in trance state you are in control at all times, so unless you want to dance like a chicken....

Am I under the power of the hypnotherapist?

Again I have to stress the difference between stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Stage hypnotists make it look as if they have power over those they hypnotise. The  people they have on stage are willing participants, it is simply not true that a hypnotist has any control over you. Hypnotherapy is a two way process and you remain in control at all times and you can come out of the trance state anytime you choose. You will not tell me your secrets, unless you choose to, hypnosis is not a truth drug. In fact unless you are having past life regression, I will not ask you to speak while you are hypnotised.
